Mondale sweeps Baytown area in Democratic caucuses

Baytown area Democrats backed Walter Mondale heavily at precinct conventions, part of Texas delegate selections for the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco. Incumbent James L. Douglas of Baytown earned the Democratic nomination for a fourth term as Harris County Precinct 3 constable, defeating Louis Fawcett 8,429 to 2,286 in unofficial results. He will face Republican Dale Schimming in November after Schimming ran unopposed in his primary.

In Anahuac, incumbent C E Morris won the Democratic sheriff nomination with over 64 percent, defeating Wesley King in all precincts amid a 5,121 Democratic primary vote result from 9,692 registered voters. In Precinct 6 constable, Larry Stratmann edged Jim Curl by four votes, 425 to 421, with Curl declining a recount. Countywide, Guy C Jackson II beat Kevin Smith for Democratic Executive Committee Chairman, 2,615 to 1,567.

Runoffs Set in Chambers County Races for Tax Office and Precinct 3

In Anahuac two runoff contests emerge for Chambers County as Douglas Co. Dugat Sr. and Irene Clore lead the tax assessor collector race with 28.3 and 26.2 percent. E.B. Booster Stephenson faces Earl Porter in the Precinct 3 commissioner runoff after Porter’s 30.6 percent win.
