Former Baytown resident and Humble Oils employee Aif D. Godwin died in a daytime car accident about 2 p.m. Thursday in Mineola. He was an elder at Lakewood Church of Christ when living in Baytown.

A civil service examination for Baytown Police Department recruitment is set for 6 p.m. May 17 at Sterling Municipal Library with May 16 as filing deadline. Chief Blair Mann reports 21 applications. Nine patrol positions await nine recruits including four replacing resignations and five from council actions. Starting pay约475 monthly. Applicants aged 21 to 36 with 5 feet 8 inches height and 145 pounds minimum must be in good health and moral standing.
At a special meeting the Baytown City Council endorsed the first phase of a 438790 dollar water system improvement, authorizing Turner Collie and Braden to draft plans within about 120 days. Phase one focuses on a 12 inch line along Highway 146 to support commercial growth with six and eight inch lines across the city.
The World Journal Tribune announces its cessation of publication with today’s issue after a newsroom meeting. Formed March 21, 1966 from a merger of the World Telegram, Sun, Herald Tribune, and Journal-American, it states staff layoffs follow. The move leaves New York Posts as the city’s only Manhattan afternoon paper, while Times and Daily News remain morning dailies.
Army platoon sergeant Joel R Wood 28 son of Roy and Mrs Wood Highlands received the Silver Star for heroism near Dak To Vietnam on June 9 while with the 01st Airborne Division. He moved to lead his platoon after the leader was hit, exposed himself under fire to aid wounded and direct fire on insurgents. His wife Patricia resides at 203 Greendell Highlands.
Thorn becomes Manager of Bays' town Research and Development division of Esso Research and Engineering replacing Farmer who moves to Esso Chemical Co. in New York City. Dr Wood succeeds Thorn as manager of Enjay Polymer Laboratory Linden New Jersey. Farmer husband and children relocate to Baytown. Thorn’s family to join in June.
The school board approved a 7.77 million dollar bond package focusing on nine central instructional materials centers costing 442000 and 350000 for kindergarten classroom space. The plan may create two or more rooms at central schools while potentially adjusting elementary attendance areas to relieve crowded campuses. A field house was not deleted from the proposal.
Baytown Boat Club hosts fifteen heats on the San Jacinto River at Highlands marking the inauguration of its new building at Cedar Lake Drive. Mrs Lupe Ramirez a popular Baytown seamstress is listed in St Josephs Hospital Houston awaiting surgery next week with press reports noting her condition and expected procedure.
A wall collapsed at an atomic power plant under construction near Cordova TL injuring an undetermined number of workers. The incident is part of a string of regional disasters including a fatal dynamite blast in a central Philippines fishing town and severe weather damage in West Texas and Central Texas.
School district voters will be asked to approve a bond issue of 7.77 million dollars and three separate propositions for renovations in Phase 1 at 2.65 million, Phase 2 stadium at 1.06 million, Phase 3 additions at 4.06 million. A fourth proposal would authorize a tax increase to retire the bond if approved. Superintendent Gentry estimated a four percent interest rate and potential yearly tax increases for homeowners.
A Texas coalition of over 40 people led by Trinity Improvement Association president Ben H. Carpenter urged a House subcommittee to approve about 115 million for Trinity River basin water projects. The plan targets flood control water supply and recreation along the basin between Houston and Dallas, benefiting Harris County and many cities.
A proposed district bond includes a stadium for 20 000 spectators at an estimated cost of 1 060 000 with offices restrooms and facilities. The plan also lists renovations at Alamo Anji Jones Ashbel Smith Carver Harlem Highlands James Bowie Lamar and Sam Houston elementary schools with costs ranging from 10 000 to 360 000 and work including classrooms restrooms roofing flooring and cafeteria updates.
William F. Davis aged 55 a former director and vice president of Humble Pipeline Co died Thursday in a Houston hospital after a heart attack. Services are set for Saturday at 10 a.m. at Foley Funeral Home with burial at Forest Park West in Houston.
Lee College keeps the musical running with two more performances at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the college auditorium. Lead roles feature Charlotte Baumbach as Janice Dayton and Gordon Uts as Ribinski, with a full cast and crew handling sets, lighting, makeup, and choreography for the production directed by Thurman Rowlett Jr.
