Senate backs plan to overhaul Texas school financing
Lt. Gov. Dewhurst and 29 senators approved a bill to replace Robin Hood with an expanded sales tax and local option property tax, aiming to reduce property taxes in Texas. The plan would raise the state sales tax to 7.25 percent, expand to services, exclude medical and dental, and set a statewide property tax cap of 75 cents per 100 dollars, with local voter approval possible for extra levies. The House has a separate approach seeking 1.2 billion extra for schools and no clear path to a full replacement.
