The Baytown Sun reports voters will decide City Council Districts 2 and 3 today. District 2 features incumbent Scott Sheley challenged by Gil Gerlich, while District 3 pits Calvin Mundinger against Cindy Gudgell Mitchell Pearce. Polls run 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Residents weigh voting locations at City Hall 2401 Market Street and district sites. Calvin Mundinger proposes an Industrial District Agreement plan to raise revenue in 2004, while Cindy Gudgell cites higher property values and a larger share of property taxes to ease the shortfall. Both stress trimming nonessential services and protecting core public safety and infrastructure.
ExxonMobil Baytown workers issued a 60 day strike notice after union members rejected the final contract offer. Clerical workers picketed the old Houston headquarters site as a mediator is expected to meet with the company next week. The dispute involves about 24 clerical staff among 6,200 Baytown employees and contractors at the refinery and chemical plants.
Two 150-foot reactors, each 12 feet in diameter and about 500 tons, will be moved to the Cedar Bayou Plant at 9500 Interstate 10 East today and Monday. Expect traffic slowdowns on Massey Tompkins Road and Sjolander Road during morning hours. Transit is led by Mampet with cooperation from DPS and Baytown Police Department.
Human remains were found in a field on F M 3180 south of F M 565 shortly before 3 p m Friday by maintenance workers mowing the property. Justice of the Peace Larry Cryer said the remains will be investigated by the sheriff s department.
Baytown fairgrounds host the Baytown Youth Fair BBQ Cook Off with 25 teams paying 75 dollars each to compete in five categories. Teams praise the community event and camaraderie while judges select winners in chicken brisket ribs fajitas chili and best margarita.
