Crockett teacher wins parental partner award
Ira Johnson, nominated by Crockett Elementary, is named one of three winners of the Texas Association of Business first parental partner award. Johnson, a single mother of three and an adopted niece, balances work with three children’s activities and school involvement. The Baytown Chamber will honor her at a Goose Creek luncheon.

Senior Citizens Photo Gardening Contest Under Way
The annual Photo Gardening Contest for Precinct 2 Senior Citizens runs through May 30 for entries. Open to residents 55 and older in North Channel Baytown, with 20 categories from amaryllis to wildflowers. The Garden Party on June 6 at Leon Grayson Community Center features Southwest Enchantment, a plant showcase, free seed and clippings, a Best Decorated Avocado contest, and a presentation on drought tolerant plants by Maria Vaughn of Vaughn's Nursery Channelview.

The ExxonMobil Baytown Refinery held a Cinco de Mayo celebration at its Main Office Building hosted by Mayor Pete Alfaro and Refinery Manager Mike Brown. Sonia Ortiz sang, La Tipica orchestra played, Travis Elementary School students performed dances, and attendees enjoyed fajitas.
