After a bloody week Baytown records its first two homicides of 2008 within two days. Detectives believe the shootings are not linked. The first occurred Sunday night on West Republic Street, leaving 33 year old Rafael Infante dead before officers arrived. Police continue investigations.
A coalition of local and state groups marks six months of White's clean air deadline by blasting regulators and urging industry to cut emissions. Baytown officials and Texas Rep. Wayne Smith opposed the mayor's bid to curb benzene in east Harris County refineries, leading to withdrawal of the proposal. At a press event, groups cited toxic hotspots such as the Lynchburg ferry area where benzene and styrene create dangerous air.
The 48th Baytown Youth Fair and Livestock Show will feature a live concert and a unified showmanship event for special needs children at North Main. Donnie White, former president and current board member, shared excitement as volunteers built ticket booths and erected about 900 feet of fencing, with new boards in 15 box seats and a fresh coat of paint outside. President Joey Enderli also praised the concert as a centerpiece of the fair’s expanded plan.
