Record auction shows Hals painting tops old masters
New York auction house Parke Bernet sold Franz Hals The Merry Lute Player for 600000 US dollars, a record for Hals in America. The sale from the Oscar B. Cintas collection drew bids from Edward Speelman in London and a Connecticut private collector, who also bought a Hals portrait for 80000 dollars. The evening netted 1280.50 in total, amid rising prices for old masters as museums acquire most top items.
