Hoffa Seeks Pacts With Foreign Unions On Shipments
Teamsters leader James R. Hoffa told the House Merchant Marine Committee he aims to broaden talks beyond the United States to Europe to deter foreign unions from handling shipments that could affect a Teamsters strike. An official later said no such pacts are actively pursued. Hoffa defended strikes as a bargaining tool and dismissed compulsory arbitration and cooling-off periods, arguing wartime-like conditions alone justify emergency measures. He asserted the national economy isn’t driven by strikes but by industry shifts and wages, and he ruled out a nationwide trucking strike.
