The Houston Ship Channel, 530 feet wide and 52 miles long, connects Houston to global markets. Initiated after the 1900 Galveston hurricane and aided by oil finds and Rep. Tom Ball’s push, dredging began in 1912 and the port opened November 10, 1914, growing to lead U.S. foreign waterborne tonnage and imports.
