Accidents Hurt Nine People Over Weekend

Baytown weekend traffic left nine injured with five hospitalized and four in serious condition. Graphic wrecks include three Lee High School girls Misa Weatherly 17 Kathryn Walker 16 and Sammie Cassidy 16 injured when Weatherly’s car overturned after losing control at Aiganey 146 near Cedar Bayou rere an. Weatherly head injuries and several victims pinned in the wreck. Local responders pulled victims from debris and transported them to San Jacinto Memorial Hospital. In another crash at Caty and Wade roads Pat Aguilar 29 and his 53 year old mother Carlotta Aguilar were in critical condition. wife Anna and infant Gilbert plus sister Lilly Aguilar recovering at home. Driver D Tompkins 42 uninjured in the related collision. Frank Marion 51 injured in Highlands remains sore at home.

Circus Elephant Kills Boy During Peanut Offer

SARASOTA FL March 27 A tragedy hit the nation's biggest circus as Dolly a trained elephant killed five year old Edward Roger Schooley during a training session. The boy offered a peanut and Dolly wrapped her trunk around him crushed his skull with her foot. Witnesses and family cried out as trainers used a pole to separate them. Edward was with his professor father Elmer Schooler mother and brother when the incident occurred. The circus officials said Dolly would be left behind as Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey prepared to leave for New York ahead of the first 1950 appearance on April 5. The state began an immediate investigation into fault.

Union Official Lands No-Strike Agreement in Houston Area

W H Burchett, business agent for the carpenters union local, hailed a no strike pact signed Saturday by contractors and laborers in Houston. The agreement bars wage adjustments without two thirds approval of the Houston Building and Trades Council and requires written notice 60 days before anniversary dates. It runs Armistice Day 1950 to June 1 953 with annual renewals. In Baytown, projects include Sears store Henke and Pilot Lee College and school additions. A three fourths signatory vote can authorize strikes, with mandatory arbitration if wage talks fail at the June 30 1950 reopening.

Dust Storm Ravages Central Kansas and Texas

Burglars Caught In Act At Four Corners Station

Two burglars later linked to a Greens Bayou grocery store robbery were caught at Gulf Service Station Four Corners at 1 am by deputies. Joe Jones and Sam Frick Lee Edward Halib 30 of Grand Island Louisiana and LeRoy Vaugh an of Greens Bayou were arrested on burglary attempted burglary and felony theft charges. HOUSTON March 27 A high quality synthetic lubricant has been developed to meet wartime needs as premium Pennsylvania fields dry. F A Seger of Paulsboro NJ disclosed the product made from coal oil shale and refinery by products with standards not obtainable from petroleum oils. Washington March 27 The Navy is activating nine volunteer reserve units in 28 coastal cities to guard harbors against submarines and surface attacks. A Navy spokesman said reserves will be trained for coastal defense duties along the Atlantic and Pacific shores.
