A Baytown area retirement fete honors Joe Barsalou, longtime Exxon technician and operations manager, after 39 years with the company. Born in Norman, Oklahoma, he rose from chemical engineering graduate to technical and plant leadership, with community roles in the Baytown area. The celebration, hosted by colleagues including Jim Boyd and Jerry Brookfield, runs from 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday at H. J. Pettis's home, 304 Third in Highlands.
In Atlanta a tornado struck early today killing three and injuring many as it tore through homes and businesses. Police report extensive damage including the governor's mansion and urgent evacuations are underway while authorities search for additional victims. Deputy Police Chief A T Hornsby said efforts focus on life saving and locating more people.
Services for Baytown chiropractor Dr. Tom Geaslin will be held at Earthman Chapel in Baytown at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. A. L. Jordan and Paul Horton officiating. He was born in Stephen Creek in 1918 and buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Stephen Creek after graveside rites by Barclay Lodge No. 37 AF&AM. Survivors include wife Ruth Geaslin, three sons Tommy Geaslin Provo Utah Benny Wayne Kirkland and Benny Kirkland, two brothers and four grandchildren. The family notes he was a World War II veteran and a member of the Texas Chiropractic Association.
Senate and House conferees met to iron out differences on a multi billion dollar tax cut. They aimed to finish today if possible with Treasury Secretary Simon and aides present. The final package, to go to President Ford, would land between 19.9 and 33.1 billion dollars.
President Ford and Henry Kissinger faced bipartisan disappointment in Congress over stalled Middle East talks. Leaders Mansfield Scott Rhodes Albert praised shuttle diplomacy but cited Egypt’s refusal to pledge nonbelligerency as key obstacle. State Sen. Chet Brooks seeks to calm fears over subsidence by proposing Senate Bill 969 to empower the Texas Water Rights Commission to regulate groundwater pumping. The bill would designate adversely affected areas, require withdrawal permits, promote surface water supplies, and ensure reasonable water rates. Unlike the Harris Galveston Counties Coastal Subsidence District, no county boundaries would limit the groundwater reservoir areas. Brooks says the measure is not in competition with the coastal district proposal and would prevent cross-county pumping from worsening subsidence.
Bay town trustees set 5:30 p.m. executive session to discuss personnel and meeting agenda. They will consider contracts totaling about 19 thousand for cafeteria supplies and equipment and bids near 20 thousand for food service, aiming to support nine districts in a deaf education program and oral language development assessment by Sylvia Stern Associates.
The program would receive full state funding if approved and serve as administrator and fiscal agent. Baytown and Pasadena host hearings with an April 1 state submission. Tides show highs around 7:30 a.m. and 8:36 p.m. lows near 1:50 a.m. and 2:16 p.m.

Texas motorists must display 1975 license plates by midnight April 1 or face enforcement. County offices report steady registration.
