All 10 Convicts Back In Custody

SUGARLAND Tex March 24 UP The last two of 10 convicts who broke loose from Harlem Prison farm near here were captured near the Addicks community north of here at 6 40 a m They surrendered to two Texas prison system officers who had been part of a single posse which had scoured the area all night The two Eliseo G Sepulveda 23 serving eight years from Haring county for burglary and Fernando O Otero 20 serving eight years from El Paso county for assault to rob said they had been chased by bloodhounds hopping on their straight through thick vegetation The other eight were caught within four hours of the break Tuesday as some 15 peace officers swarmed into the area in Fort Bend and Harris counties The 60 all Latin Americans overpowered and disarmed guard Ita Capos then dashed away afoot into the underbrush from their hardening eyes

Navy 379 exposed by Bikini fallout findings

Navy reports at least 379 people known exposed to atomic fallout from the Bikini blast on March 1 with others possibly revealed. Little Girl Dies After Five Month Meningitis Fight

Fayee Marie Massey aged nearly two, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M L Massey of La Porte, died about 4 p m at a main hospital after a five month battle with meningitis. Auto Victim Buried Today

Funeral services for Samuel Pan Tidman a three year old boy killed when struck by a tar Monday were held at Earthman chapel at 10 a m. The Rev M A Jordan and A M Dudley officiated with burial in Cedarcrest cemetery. The boy was the son of Mr and Mrs W O Tidmon. Ironically the driver was William In Martin 36 a co worker with Tidmon at the Baytown Refinery.

Ewing Weblein Is New Harris D A

Ewing Weblein takes office as Harris district attorney as workers rush a public water system project in Coady. With six working days left before the March 31 deadline, McLean Watersworks may be shut off under a district court injunction. District Inspector A Miller reports 30 percent of the 180 taps installed, pending electric power line and gas line to the well. If delays continue, the system will run on an auxiliary engine fueled by butane. The 6,500 gallon tank is in place and a 24 hour test has occurred. The water system is funded by a $115,000 bond issue. Lawrin Well Drilling Co. and Century Construction are involved.

Eisenhower says McCarthy should not judge his own case

President Eisenhower commented at a Washington news conference that a man involved in a dispute should not sit in judgment on his own case. He declined to discuss cross examination in McCarthy's Army dispute but emphasized accountability and the tradition that one cannot judge one's own involvement. Senate approves $11 million building bill after long filibuster

In Austin the Senate passed an $11 million state building bill 425 to 1 after a 3 hour 46 minute filibuster by Sen. Jimmy Phillips Angleton. The House Appropriations committee prepared to begin work on the measure as Gov. Shivers called a 30 day special session. The same day the Senate approved a $23.4 million pay package for teachers, the first piece of the governor's special session agenda. The tax committee held hearings on administration tax measures including a proposed increase in the corporation tax and beer tax as part of funding for the two big spending bills plus state employee salaries. If enacted these steps will shape the fiscal package for the session.

Burton Batthe announced San Jacinto Memorial hospital is fully approved as a Class A facility after a Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals letter. Prominent Lawyer Won’t Seek Election in Harris County

AUSTIN March 24 UP Gov. Allan Shivers named Ewing Werlein as interim district attorney for Harris County to replace William H. Scott, who was removed after charges of operating a bawdy house. Werlein, described as a prominent Houston attorney and civic leader, will not run for the office this summer, choosing to serve as interim appointee. He has long ties to Houston public life, including past roles on the school board, law school dean, University of Houston trustee, and Houston Bar Association president. Scott’s removal came after Senate refused to confirm his appointment.
