Funeral services for Mary Belle Pendleton 86 of Jonesville Virginia will be held Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church Sugar Run. She was mother of Mrs F C Saxon and Mrs B E Sutphin of Baytown Texas.

Washington AP report says Vice President Johnson is briefing the Labor Department to review and enforce penalties on contractors for racial discrimination. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People notes that skill gaps and educational barriers limit Negroes in fields like engineering and medicine. Johnson seeks a training program to lift Negro workers into higher skilled crafts and professional roles.
In Austin, Senator Bob Baker failed to secure a debate on adding the University of Houston to the state system. The 14 to 15 vote blocked the motion while the Commission on Higher Education had proposed placing UH with 41,000 students into the state system at an estimated 5 million dollars yearly. Baker cited 1500 students and job constraints in Houston, noting many cannot afford attending other state colleges.

The bill would cost about $72 million statewide plus $18 million for districts, with minimum bachelor’s pay rising to 4014 a year and $12 monthly service increments. Administrators hail potential quality gains amid teacher shortages.
