BEAUMONT Texas AP A newborn girl Carolyn Sue Wharton was kidnapped from Mast Texas Baptist Hospital Beaumont but found unharmed 13 hours later. Nurse Pauline Schulze 29 charged with the kidnapping after denying birth. Baby returned to Beaumont and mother Mary Wharton unawakened until news arrived.
Texas lawmakers study graduated taxes on cigars and trucks as a remedy for a red state treasury. Rep. Maurice Pipkin proposes a cigar tax based on price, while Rep. Charles Kirkhant backs a weight distance truck tax to raise about 1% million yearly. The House committee began hearings while other tax measures, including cigarette and gasoline levies, move through subcommittees. The House aims to fund a record two year spending plan amid fiscal crisis with salary payments briefly secured by bank support.
Funeral services for Jasper M. Jack Williams, 58, were to be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Old River Terrace Methodist Church in Channelview with Rev. J. Carr Peet officiating. Burial in White Cemetery. Williams, a native of Oklahoma, had lived in the Baytown area since 1922. Survivors include his widow Mrs. Othal Williams of Channelview, mother Mrs. Elizabeth Williams of Goleta, Calif, sister Mrs. Ruth McKinley of Ventura, Calif, and brothers I. A. Williams of Goleta and Henry Williams of Columbus, Tad. Pallbearers were I. G. Gulay, Pearson, D. L. Crist, H. A. Richmond, B. J. Dierz, Preston Gillard. Honorary pallbearers were Buck Ellisor, Bill Duplantis, Tom Gillian, Hugh Echols, Barney Gardener and Humble Oil and Refining Co employees.
Justice of the Pearce Walter Queen ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death of Phoebe Taylor, a Negro woman found dead in her bed about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Emmie Smith, her daughter, reported the mother had been ill a day or two, and the family cared for her before she died.
Police chased a car thief across Decker Drive as shots fired sent drivers to ditches. The thief fled the damaged vehicle into timber while officers, led by Set El HW Steele, pursued. The car owner is identified as Pearline Williams.
Baytown reports 92.4 percent of its current and prior year taxes collected for the fiscal year, totaling 531,024 after due dates through Feb. 1 1955. Assessor-collector C E Henratty says collections exceed the budgeted spend by 10,000 with a forecast near 94 percent of the current tax bill. Manristy slated to retire as tax collector April 1. successor unnamed.
Mrs. T. A. Mosley of 380 Greenpriar Lakewood sought help to remove an itinerant cat that used her garage as a maternity ward and produced kittens Monday night. She was told city departments cannot assist and to contact the fresh water district for specifics.
Severe weather warnings from Dallas forecast a belt of storms across Texas as an 80 mile per hour winds battered towns from Montague to San Antonio. The Baytown area logged 72 to 80 degree temperatures with a trace of rain while Houston warned of a cold front and spring arrival. Damages included shattered windows, toppled trees, and disrupted service, with two houses moved from foundations and sporadic injuries avoided. The storm system spawned hail, street flooding, and power outages across North, East, and South Texas as it moved eastward toward Louisiana.
The Baytown American Red Cross opens its 220 East DeFeo offices with a 10 am to 6 pm open house showcasing services and exhibits from Red Cross units including home nursing first aid and Junior Red Cross. Local officials and volunteers attend as the remodeled facility, funded by Humble Oil and Refining Tay town Refinery, is unveiled.
Five cars in the Humble Inn parking lot were ransacked Sunday night with broken right front windows. Police said no items were missing. Lester Lord of Madison notified authorities after discovering his damaged window, and four other men arrived to report similar damage.

A Convair jet with 35 aboard crashed in a muddy field near Springfield Municipal Airport Sunday night. Thirteen died and nine were injured as the plane bound for Tulsa from Newark plowed into the field amid dim emergency response. Survivors recalled no warning before impact.
