Fate of Quack Shack: meeting to decide Tuesday

Baytown Jaycee sponsors a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday gathering at the Chamber of Commerce to determine the future of the Quack Shack youth center across from Robert E Lee High School. Damaged by Hurricane Carla, the center has $2,500 in repairs needed and officials await decision on repair or rebuilding.

Credit Union Officials to Attend Texas Credit Union Meet

Humble Oil Baytown Refinery officials will join Eastern and Baytown Teachers Credit Unions at the 28th annual Texas Credit Union meeting this weekend in Galveston. Delegates include C T Kelly and John W Sylvester, with W S MacKinnon as Houston Chapter president and Dan Matthews among attendees. More than 2,000 delegates are expected as sessions run Thursday night through Sunday morning at Moody Convention Center.

Groundbreaking for Highway 146 near La Porte set

Members of the Highway 146 Association formed last week will break ground next Monday on a one mile section between the three level interchange and Spencer Highway in La Porte. A luncheon reception at Zeisig's Restaurant follows. 80 tickets available for $3 from the Baytown Chamber of Commerce.

Houston School Board Denied Contempt Over Integration Plan

U S District Judge Ben Connally declined to hold the Houston School Board in contempt of a grade year racial integration plan. Negro lawyers argued the board used enrollment tactics to dilute the order, targeting a brother and sister rule forcing siblings to same school. The board revised the rule after hearings, removing kindergarten implications.

New School Textbooks Ordered for Baytown Schools

Baytown schools will issue new textbooks for grades four through eight this fall. Fourth graders receive A Journey Through Many Lands geography, fifth grade Journeys Through the Americas, sixth grade The Eastern Hemisphere, and Thorndike Barnhart English dictionaries for four to seven. Eighth grade music uses Music in Our Times. eighth grade history uses The Story of the American Nation. High school texts include Science, Discovery and Progress, Physical Science A Basic Course, Rise of the American Nation, The History of Our World, and World History The History of Our World. Four Raytonians Named Distinguished Students at A&M

Four Raytonians were named Distinguished Students at Texas A and M College for the fall semester. Michael W. Thurman son of J W Thurman E Wright Avom V Waynes Ur son of Mr and Mrs a Ve Vimes T Killough son of Mr and Mrs Dave Killah W Cleveland and Wop SP Mecaascat are honored. Thurman majors in business administration with a 2.44 GPA while Killough a freshman civil engineering major posted a strong showing. Rudder announced the awards noting strong academic records and campus leadership among the honorees.

OCAW Members To Get Contract Negotiation Data

Officials of the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union Baytown Local 4333 urge members to attend a 7 p.m. meeting at the union hall where the workmen's committee will report on contract negotiations with Humble Oil and Refining Co. Baytown Refinery. An executive board session precedes at 6:30 p.m. A 9 a.m. Tuesday membership meeting was held for those unable to attend. The committee presented a written report on negotiations while a 30 day extension of the contract was in effect since February 9. The union and company have agreed on some provisions but stalemate remains over others.

Indicted for March 2 killing at La Porte home

Raymond Jude David 23 of La Porte was indicted for murder in the Abireh 2 slaying of Martin Hl. Tewes 48, a Baytown Refinery employee, shot at the La Porte home of David’s mother in law, Marjorie Cox on San Jacinto Street. Police say David arrived with a pistol to confront Tewes. Tewes died at the scene. David was arrested soon after. Other indictments included Artie Flores 25 for a Houston gang murder on Jan 27 and Albert Young 35 for killing his wife Johnnie Mae on March 8.
