The Evian Evian cease-fire ends 74 years of war between France and Algeria. Premier Youssef ben Khedda says peace has not arrived. NASA Manned Spacecraft Center at Clear Lake outlines architectural concepts for a new 11 story laboratory and a separate editorium-display building. Geneva AP report says the Soviet Union signals willingness to negotiate a three power accord with the United States and Britain on a nuclear test ban. Zorin announced Moscow would join talks in Geneva with Paris and London possible, while opposing immediate international inspections.
A multimillion dollar Freeport Sulphur Co. sulphur well off Grand Isle Louisiana erupted in a massive fire after a Sunday night explosion. Flames 100 feet high lit the Gulf waters as crews fought to control the blaze with no injuries reported. The offshore platform, valued at about $20 million, suffered severe damage to the derrick and deck. Officials warned damage estimates were not yet available though a six figure loss was anticipated. The idle well that had been quiet for a week sparked the blaze as gas fed the flames and several workers evacuated before the inferno spread.
Voters in five Bayshore subdivisions south of La Porte rejected an $800,000 sewer and water line bond issue for Bayshore Municipal Utility District by 102 to 81. About 183 of an estimated 500 eligible voters cast ballots at Convenient Grocery on Highway 146. District President E R Hermann blamed low voter turnout and underestimating opposition. The plan planned to issue $500,000 bonds with $290,000 available without tax increases, and the district had received an $8,000 federal grant for a feasibility study. The board may resubmit after further engineering work. The district board includes Dr. Hermann and Otis C. Murray.

The trial of Houston ex-convict George Trabing, 29, was continued to the June 4 term of Toth District Court in Chambers County on motion by defense attorneys Joe Sandlin and C. B. Cain Jr. About 600 people attended as the state indicated it would seek the death penalty for Trabing, who admitted killing Houston Negro school teacher Mrs. Winifred Jean Whitaker on December 7.
Crosby School Board approved nine textbooks for fall use in Crosby Schools. Superintendent Alison Koonce announced titles covering geography world history US history and language arts. A state textbooks committee prepared the list, with board members selecting the committee.
