Raccoon Drive Road Expansion Aims for Safer Two Lanes
The $5.9 million joint city and Harris County project on Raccoon Drive will convert two 11 foot lanes into two 12 foot through lanes with a 14 foot left turn, cover drainage ditches, add sidewalks, and improve safety. Crews have completed underground utility work south of Cary's Bayou Bridge, with paving slated to begin in April. Residents voiced concerns about delays and speed, but officials expect long term benefits including elimination of sharp S curves and safer pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle traffic.

Smith's pie shop rises from hardship to regional fame
In the 1980s Smith and her three children lived on food stamps until she started baking pies in her Baytown kitchen. Five local restaurants carried her pies, a garage-sale oven of $50, and SBA loan help launched a 600 square foot shop. By year one she earned over $100,000, expanded staff to 15, and sold pre packaged crusts to chains in TX, LA, MS and Sam's Club. In 1988 she won Woman Advocate of the Year and later retired to teach cooking classes at Lee College while her famed recipes live on.
