Elmer DeShazo Returns Home From Hospital

Elmer DeShazo of 1200 Missouri has returned home after a stay in a Baytown hospital. A family member reports he is doing fine and may receive visitors. Azalea Trail Lakewood Garden Club’s event is set for Saturday from 1 to 4 pm with refreshments at 4148 Burnet. Unlood Services will host a mobile blood unit Saturday at Sun parking lot from 8 am to 3 pm to collect donations for replacement of blood used in treatment of the late George Cassily. A civil service exam for Baytown Police patrolmen, originally scheduled for March 90, has been canceled until further notice per Police Chief Bo Turner.

Public Meetings Set Here By Basic Education Group

A Raytown based group of parents and teachers plans two public meetings on education trends with out of state speakers. ABC brings Mrs. Prancvs Walker Ashbury to speak on Current Trends in Progressive Education at 7 30 p m Thursday at Second Baptist Church. A Graham Down talks on Back to Basics at 7 30 p m March 29 at Lee College Auditorium. Both will attend the National School Board Association convention in Houston March 26 28 where Down is a keynote speaker. Ashbury is Maryland educator and former Frederick County Board of Education member. Down is executive director of the Council for Basic Education and has a background in England and U S education.

Civil Service Boss Won't Be Reappointed

Sam Alford chair and ex executive director of Baytown Civil Service Commission will not be reappointed when the matter goes before the city council. City Manager Fitz Lanham said the council will select a successor, noting Alford ends his four year term and the post will be filled by another. Lanham called the job time consuming and said Alford will retire after a four year tenure.

Winter Price Spike Blamed on Severe February Weather

February consumer prices jumped one percent the largest rise in 28 months as winter disruptions cut food supplies. Food costs surged with fresh vegetables up a record 20.9 percent while fruits and coffee rose, and fuel prices climbed with winter's impact.
