Eisenhower Warns GOP on Tax Cut Push

President Eisenhower told Republican congressional leaders that tax cutters have gone too far and Democratic tax cut plans would be excessive. He previewed a national radio and TV speech to be delivered Monday night. House Speaker Martin said the Ways and Means panel overreached with excise tax cuts and warned the Democratic proposal would cost about 2.5 billion yearly.

Oil Well Spacing Studied By Baytown Officials

City officials in Baytown study oil well spacing practices in Conroe and Corpus Christi as they prepare a two part public hearing on an oil well spacing ordinance. Parr Wins Fight To Postpone Trial

Judge Wash Storm Jr postponed the trial of political boss George B Parr for a week on illegal pistol possession charges after vigorous objections from County Attorney Sam Burris. Defense attorney Ed Lloyd, representing the Tex Mex and Texas and New Orleans railroads in a related flood damages suit, argued for the delay citing ongoing district court actions. The crowded Alice courtroom heard Lloyd contend the railroad case began months earlier. Storm scheduled Parr’s case for the following Monday.

Civic Music association announced next year’s lineup headlined by tenor Rounseville from Tales of Hoffmann. The Victor Herbert Festival features Lilian Murphy, Jean Leslie, Glen Darwin, a 12-voice chorus and duo-piano team with Naomi Warr, Ferrante and Teicher, Hugh Thompson, Reginald Kell Players, Sidney Foster, and an 11-piece orchestra. Baby and Sitters Land In Hospital After Car Crash

A Baytown mother’s 16 month old child and two men, Roland Kaderli and Bill Binford, were taken to San Jacinto Memorial hospital after a vehicle struck a light pole on Lee Drive causing a blackout. Kaderli faced charges of drunkenness and disturbing the peace at the hospital. Binford was charged with drunkenness. The baby remained in the hospital overnight before being returned home.

Gambler Rose Maceo Dies in Galveston Empire

Rosario Rose Maceo, long known as head of a wide network of night clubs and gambling rooms in Galveston, died at his home after a two year illness. He was 66. In 1951 state crime commission hearings in Austin he was described as the top force behind the Maceo empire including the Balinese Room.
