Trustees debate whether to replace New Haven high schools stadium or repair the existing Novate Memorial Stadium. They weigh costs, long term needs, and how repairs or a new facility would affect plans for a third elementary school and other district buildings.
A second public hearing on the proposed city zoning ordinance will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at city hall. Larry Hale, chairman of the City Planning and Zoning Commission, invites all interested residents to attend, ask questions, and express views. Hale will moderate.
Sterling school board approved final payment to Span-Glass Inc totaling 18,200 plus 1,353.90 in dispute, ending 4,487.19 under the original contract. Also authorized Harlem Elementary payout of 42,020.02 and released 610 to Marco Construction for Highlands repairs amid heated board debate led by Trustee Boyd Hill.
Seven candidates seek the April city council seats three districts contest with filings on Friday. Edward W. Greer of 3303 Garth Road listed as a bookkeeper at Humble Refining Co Baytown Refinery filed for District 3 and would face incumbent Don Hullum if he proceeds. Dr. Philip T. Hichelberger Jr. of 1601 Southwood Roseland Oaks picked up a filing form at city hall and planned to file, potentially opposing Lamar Kelley in District council. District 2 already has three candidates including Charles L. Check.

Baytowns ambulance service study committee asked Belfort Ambulance Co for figures on operations over the past two months. Council members met owner Joe Camp and will call a special session to discuss the overall problem and finance. Belfort reportedly lost money in January and February, with delays and emergency calls prompting scrutiny.
Byron Buster reports on coach Brannon of Texas Christian University retiring after 24 years as head basketball coach. Texas senators send to governor a bill allowing breweries to import and repack and sell to distributors from other states. Plans for federal action in Harlem case rise. Twenty four Baytown Junior School students entered the annual science fair with exhibits to be opened to the public from 4 to 6 p.m. Mary Jane Hodges showcases hamsters after diet tests proving a fat diet harmed one, carbohydrate diet changed another, while a third thrives on a standard diet. Leroy Burkholder presents a neutron explanation and plotting theory outline. Most interest lies in biology with four classifications including biological earth physical science and mathematics.
Southern Pacific dropped its appeal to halt the Baytown steel mill project. U S Steel plans to push Texas Works construction with dispatch as Mopac litigation ends. Baytown MP Spur completion and ship channel talks ease access to the site, while Liberty Chambers County Navigation District discusses a Houston Ship Channel link.
Washington reports compare Sen. Robert Kennedy and President Johnson on bombing North Vietnam. Kennedy argues bombing may prolong the war and tests Soviet willingness to negotiate. Johnson defends aerial strikes as burdensome but necessary, and insists the war will end only with equivalent moves from the other side.
Houston AP reports Little Sir Edie the grand champion steer sold for 15000 at the Houston Livestock Show auction. Anne Patton a 19 year old Stephens College sophomore from Kenotland Indiana watched as her 895 pound black Angus was purchased by Nick Merrew of Vande Fetroleum.
Architect Lowell Lammers says the new city hall and recreation center should be completed by July with excavation and fill 7 percent done, steel 97 percent, masonry 95 percent, plumbing 5 percent, stud wall framing 80 percent, electrical and mechanical 50 percent, gap board and lath 25 percent, painting 5 percent, and 140 calendar days remaining to finish.
Precincts across Harris and Chambers counties set voting sites and judges for the Saturday April 1 school district trustees election. Terms for Boyd N Hill and Tillman D O'Brien expire that date. Ballot positions drawn Wednesday and Thursday. Absentee voting overseen by Hobart W Enoch with clerks Gladys Casey and Heidi Bishop. Voting machines will be used in accordance with Texas Election Code.
