Echols finds a 1938 Dallas Morning News clipping about a garden photo showing Christ. Mrs. Jim Boone and children from Tuscaloosa visit Port Neches relatives. Lois Steadham of Mont Belvieu visits son Wilkie Ray Steadham who had eye surgery in Virginia. Wilkie trains Arthur Godfrey's horses and appeared with him on TV at Beacon Hill Farm, Paeonian Spring, Va.
Officials search for victims after a Dominicana Air Lines cargo plane crashed into a Miami street near the international airport. Four crew members and six on the ground were killed. about a dozen injured. Debris destroyed buildings and vehicles, with property losses estimated near $1 million.
Harris County court postpones a decision on Houston Lighting and Power Co. request for a 340 foot easement to run 345000 volt overhead lines through Albert Deussen County Park. Ramsey supports the route to connect Cedar Bayou and Greens Bayou plants. Elliott Lyons oppose. A representative will be invited to explain the park route.
A downtown promotion runs July 3 with auction bucks earned at dollar for dollar from purchases. Auction items include a blanket, luggage, radio, lamp, cuff links, watch, golf bag, a $50 savings bond, and a charcoal grill. A beauty contest for young children, another for older youths, finals at 7:40 p.m., and top merchant sales and sidewalk artists accompany the auction at Citizens National Bank lobby and surrounding downtown stores.
Metal trades unions vote two to one against a Dow Chemical Co and Ethyl-Dow Chemical Co contract offer in Angleton. The AP report notes related government logs of wiretapped conversations involving Cassius Clay and other global stories including Nixon missile defense critics and campus security measures.
The school board approved about 820,000 in vocational equipment for Ross Sterling and Robert E. Lee high schools. Funds will be shared 50 50 by the district and the federal government through the Texas Education Agency. Bids were opened June 18, with 10 firms sharing awards. Equipment will serve cosmetology, building trades, machine shop, welding, and auto mechanics, aiding the district near the end of its 7.7 million bond program.
Washington AP report says Rep. Gerald Foard predicts at least 130 Republican votes to extend the income surtax, with a House vote likely Wednesday. Dirksen doubts passage before June 20. Rules Committee may back a closed rule. Opposition plans to challenge the rule and defeat the measure.
London reports dispute claims that Judy Garland died from sleeping pills as police and coroner prepare an inquest. Authorities say pills found in her home were not near the body and await autopsy results to determine the cause of death.
Ted Watson, 17, son of Dr. and Mrs. A. T. Watson, leaves for Finland as a summer student in the American Field Service. He will spend three days in New York City, then Brussels for briefing before joining a host family in Helsingfors. He returns in September to enter Robert E. Lee High School as a senior.
The district will open bids at 4 p.m. Thursday for a 4320 square foot addition to the School Administration Building and a 2400 square foot library addition at Baytown Junior School. The projects, funded by a 7.7 million bond program, include plumbing, electrical, HVAC and other features. A second bid round for 20 educational television systems at 19 schools and the Administration Building will be opened at 3 p.m. Thursday after revisions to exclude electrical work.
The school board may name a new superintendent next week to succeed Supt. George H. Gentry. President Karl W. Opryshek suggested a special meeting for Monday or Tuesday as the board nears a July 1 announcement and an August 1 start date for the new appointee. Gentry will become superintendent emeritus through his Aug. 31, 1970 contract.
