Seamen from four maritime unions picketed major Gulf Coast tanker operators for a guaranteed wage. Pickets formed at Sun Oil Baytown Gulf Oil La Porte Texas City Port Arthur and Sinclair refinery in New Orleans area. Some unions withdrew at Sinclair after a New York agreement. reports vary on impact as many workers crossed lines while night shifts reported for duty.
Neighbors report a prowler at the north Fern Lane area near Poinsettia Street in Highlands Park, seen on two occasions and suspected as the dog attacker. A dog poisoned with strychnine by a fence at 224 Fern Lane was blamed on the same suspect. Mrs. Hyman offers a $5 reward for information. A dogcatcher arrived at daylight and took a street dog, provoking warnings about arrest if dogs are left out at night.
About 25 Baytonians will travel Thursday to Corpus Christi for the 36thannual VFW state encampment. Gov. Allan Shivers will address the opening session at 10 a.m. Friday at the Exposition Building. A parade along Ocean Drive follows his address. Baytown delegates include District 4 Commander W. C. Moravits and Mrs. Moravits, retiring District 4 Ladies Auxiliary President, and State Department Treasurer Victor Serbe, with other officers and auxiliary members. Eight Baytown women are part of the District 4 military band. district 4 sponsors a candidate for junior vice commander T. C. Setiman of Pasadena.
Bulletin San Antonio reports meteorologist Milton Rudd forecast thunderstorms for the San Antonio area on Tuesday. He climbed atop the weather station to check conditions when a bolt of lightning knocked him down. He was unhurt.
County officials welcomed Rep. Thomas’s announcement that the San Jacinto Ordnance depot will be removed. The 5,000 acre site could yield 20 plus industrial parcels along the channel, with Pasadena and Channelview expected to gain most, while Baytown sees modest benefits and Galena Park limited impact. Local leaders call the move Harris County’s biggest industrial hurdle cleared.
Bids will be opened at 3 pm Thursday June 30 for swimming pools at Robert E Lee and Carver schools. Project cost about 300000 with pools costing 90000 and buildings 210000. Lammers project includes added physical education space and dressing rooms, funded by June 1 1834 board issue. Final authorized project under 51 million bonds. Separate bids may be for pools only or buildings. combined bid possible.
City Manager C Darwin Middleton said Baytown will begin widening a one block section of North Gaillard next to the main post office as soon as current projects finish. The federal government has agreed to supply enough property to widen the block by ten feet. Nelson McKilray of the Baytown Chamber of Commerce noted the project is pending city readiness and supports faster completion for better parking near the post office.

Eighth grade twirling class, drum major Barbara Morgan, and ninth grade twirlers Kay Clark Joyce Stassi Roma Gray Carolyn Drnacer will perform alongside band numbers conducted by Band Captain Ken Roberts and Lt Don Padgett.

A Baytown couple of Rebel Inn owners plan a charity buffet for 16 year old Roy Carter, injured in a PRA field trip accident. The fundraiser, organized with Robert E. Lee agriculture staff, will use proceeds for medical expenses and benefit Roy, with tickets at 1.50 dollars and 0.30 dollars to cover meal prep. FFA members continue fund drives, and donations are urged through the Baytown Chamber of Commerce or local business donation jars.
Washington reports President Eisenhower accepted the resignation of Army Secretary Robert T. Stevens for personal reasons and named Michigan Governor Wilber M. Bricker as his successor. Stevens, 55, a textile magnate, leaves after 27 years in service. Bricker previously served as Michigan's governor and state attorney general.
Thirteen Baytown area youths departed for military induction early Wednesday morning. The sendoff included Baytown Chamber of Commerce members George Kulak Eldon Glenn Lewry and David G Heater The inductees traveled by bus via Baytown Draft Board No 63, with a brief Houston stopover and a likely flight to Fort Ord California. The next Baytown group is scheduled for July 12.
Alumni of St Joseph's School of Nursing celebrate the school's 0th anniversary with a weekend homecoming. They meet at Clear Lake at 9 am Saturday for an all day picnic, attend a mass and breakfast Sunday at the Student Building Houston, tour the campus, enjoy a Shamrock hotel luncheon, a 4 pm tea, and a Sunday evening dance to close.
