Segregation Boycott Ties Boston Schools to Citizenship Movement
In Boston, a boycott led by Negro leaders inclines 5,000 of 14,000 Negro students to skip public schools. The action cites de facto segregation in public schools, with leaders urging admission of segregation concerns and urging parents to enroll children in neighborhood centers for citizenship and freedom movement instruction. Lecturers include Bishop Stokes, Harvard’s Pettigrew, and Bill Russell. The School Committee seeks state guidance on compulsory education laws.
