Wednesday Talk On Minority Race Study At Lee College

Lee College instructor Fred E. Adams will discuss minority race problems in education and employment at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Maude Moller Hall. He has spent 14 months studying disadvantaged youth with a three year Southern Regional Education Board grant. Adams notes few minorities use junior college programs and aims to involve the community to help students return to school and gain skills.

Agnew urges Rhodes to resign over campus unrest remarks

Vice President Spiro T. Agnew criticized Joseph Rhodes Jr a 22 year old Harvard junior fellow and said if remarks attributed to him are accurate he should resign from the President's Commission on Campus Unrest. The commission is led by former Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton and appointed by President Nixon.

Lee College may build own sewage facilities north campus

City Planning Director Wilhite told a Lee College planning group that expansion north of Baytown could require the college to own and operate its own sewage treatment facilities if construction starts within five years. Bond funds run to 1975 with north campus opening planned around then.

Harris County Hospital District Battles Budget Cut

Harris County Hospital District board wrestles with fitting 1970 71 expenditures into a $23.6 million budget after Commissioners Court cut the proposed six cent tax increase in half and reduced the overall budget by $803 682 from $24.4 million. The court approved a three cent tax hike to fund operations and rejected the clinic funding for Baytown Health Clinic now county financed. Dr Myke Durham warned indigent patients would suffer as a result.

Special Prosecutor To Aid DA In Baytown Area

Harris County District Attorney Carol Vance announces a special prosecutor program to screen criminal complaints before charges. The four prosecutors, two secretaries and one investigator will operate from regional offices funded by a $238,000 two year grant from the Texas Criminal Justice Council. Prosecutors will interview witnesses and guide cases to indictment, speeding up examining trials and police report submission.

Mont Belvieu to vote $415000 water bond in June

Mont Belvieu officials set a June 27 bond election for 415000 to fund sewer system upgrades, treatment plant and line improvements. The Chambers County Water Control district No 1 is to be dissolved after annexation by the city, with the water board to serve as an advisory panel during the take over.

Crosby Board Seeks $38,545 Title IV Federal Grant

Crosby School District requests a 38,545 Title IV grant to fund staff development and advisory specialists for total desegregation. Curriculum director B S Griffin outlined a plan including nine advisory specialists and two counselors, with HEW cautioning on staff numbers. The district aims to revise curricula, obtain materials, assess pupil needs, and expand audio visual aids while seeking regional HEW approval. The board also renewed Region IV Media Service at 1,940.37 based on last year attendance.

Former City Judge Named To Port Panel

James Walton Fonteno of Houston, 43, a Baytown Corporation Court judge in the 1950s, was named to the Port Commission by Harris County Commissioners Court. He studied real estate after leaving Baytown in 1958 and later moved to Houston. Only County Judge Elliott opposed his appointment.
