Baytown City Council discusses rapid internal corrosion of water pipes in at least one new apartment project causing heavy replacement costs. Samples show corrosion not from pipes but city water. council to study city-wide issue with experts, consider plastic pipe as substitute, and appoint two members to assist the engineer.
Oscar Langston a Sun correspondent and school trustee from Channelview begins a trip to Scotland to renew a friendship with John Clark his boyhood friend who was deported 30 years ago. The two 18 year olds met in the 1930s while working near Houston and shared travels across states before Clark’s visa expired. The voyage follows old memories and a long separation as Langston travels to meet Clark in Scotland.
Baytown TSPE chapter wins the outstanding small chapter award at the state meeting held at the Shamrock Hotel in Houston. Tommy Cook, president, notes Baytown’s 100 members competed with larger chapters like Fort Worth, which won the public relations prize.
City Attorney Bill Laughlin will return to Austin June 30 to cross examine Houston Pipeline Co witnesses in a Railroad Commission rate case. He attended hearings in the Thompson Building, noting Houston City Attorney Olson assists. A key Houston witness travels Europe in July, delaying further cross examination. WOOSTER BAPTIST Mission Vacation Bible School opens at 9 a.m. Monday for youths three to 14 at 2027 Lakeview Drive.
Baytown legislator Joe Allen reviewed Texas 61st Legislature actions for Baytown Chamber members. He highlighted passage of the Torts Claim Act, higher workers compensation, pollution law fixes, teacher pay raises for 10 years, new medical and dental schools, new district courts, the open meetings law, and breathalyzer tests, while noting failures in school district consolidation, funding reforms, constitutional revision, ethics code, and permanent voter registration.
District Attorney Carol Vance's office directs Baytown Police to handle the case of a California couple charged in sex perversion offenses, with 11 counts including rape and keeping an assignation house. Bond set at 59,700 for Robert L. Ziriax and Rebecca Ziriax, both teens involved, and juveniles from ages 13 to 16 reportedly part of the circle. The couple will be transferred to Harris County jail as the case proceeds locally with all charges filed here.
Ollie J. Ford of McNair paid a 100 dollar fine in Justice of the Peace Glenn Vickery's court for maintaining a public nuisance. The charge, filed by W. H. Larrimer of the Harris County Health Department, said Ford kept an unsanitary garbage dump at 2400 Interstate 16. Judge Vickery warned of a 200 per day fine for each day of continued violation after a reasonable cleanup period. Ford works as a private garbage collector in the McNair area.
Sp. 4 Robin L. Jones, 19, of Baytown, stationed near Saigon, receives the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in combat. A 1987 Robert E. Lee High School graduate and Eagle Scout, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orlan R. Jones. His brothers Miles Ned and Jim also figure in the Baytown family, with Miles headed to the U S Military Academy and Ned a Sterling High junior.
The Soviet Union published a note in Moscow rejecting Chinese claims to territory but offering to pursue border adjustments in talks within 2 3 months. The document, delivered to the Chinese embassy and issued by Pravda, traces border history and cites Lenin and Mao quotes. Talks were proposed after clashes along the Ussuri River and a series of notes over an ensuing incident involving a herder’s death.
The Baytown Kiwanis Club will sponsor a Houston Symphony appearance at Gal Robert E. Lee High School. Dave Tracht announced the event at a Kiwanis meeting, with proceeds funding community programs and a leading guest conductor expected. Tickets will be sold soon. Attendees at the luncheon included John Wilson Harold L Wert Dolene Tracht and Baytown city manager Delly Voelkel.
