Flag Etiquette Under the United States Flag Code
The United States Flag Code defines the flag as a living symbol and outlines proper outdoor display. It requires raising the flag briskly and lowering it ceremoniously, never letting it touch the ground, and forbids flying in bad weather unless weatherproof. The flag may fly at night only if illuminated, otherwise from sunrise to sunset, and must not be used to carry items or fall freely. Upside down signaling is reserved for emergencies.
