Tornado safety precautions from Allstate official
Allstate safety director Frederick J. Gassert Jr outlines quick, practical tornado precautions. Seek inside shelter in reinforced buildings away from windows and turn off utilities if possible. In basements the southwest corner is safest, while nonbasement homes should seek protection in interior rooms. In schools stay away from doors and windows, stay near inner walls on lower floors. in rural areas guide pupils to ditches or ravines. In factories, shut electrical and gas lines and face away from the tornado path. If escape fails, lie flat in a ditch until the danger passes. Use radio or TV for updates. do not call the weather service for new reports.
