Connally to announce fate of 3.1B money bill
Gov. John Connally will tell Texans tonight how the 3.1 billion appropriations bill for state government over two years will be handled. He plans a 9:30 p.m. television appearance and a firm 10 p.m. news release. Lawmakers approved the measure despite his objections after four days of talks over higher education funding. The constitution gives Connally until Thursday to veto, sign, veto parts, or let it become law without his signature. The bill would spend 124.3 million from general revenue on state hospitals and special schools, about six million more than Connally had recommended and five million more than the initial spending bill.
