A federal judge ruled that TSP Development no longer has an option to purchase the West Chambers County site where it aimed to build a large industrial waste dump since 1995. The ruling followed a December 30 bankruptcy filing and a series of motions over the option’s viability.
Baytown officials broke ground on a 12600 square foot police academy behind the fire department on North Main Street and a 6100 square foot emergency operations center next to it. The academy costs 1.6 million funded by sales tax revenues from a defunct district. the center costs 1.2 million funded by two federal grants. Completion set for April or May.
The firefighter union proposes a 4 percent raise this year and 3.5 and 3 percent in 2005 and 2006 while a dispute with Fire Chief Craig Brown over overtime policy threatens the bargaining. Brown cites a $400,000 potential cost from callbacks and a $240,000 overtime bill since October. Local 1173 president Thomas Carr warns staffing gaps raise safety concerns.
Baytown teachers group condemns the Goose Creek board for a 10 000 raise totaling 5.9 percent for Superintendent Barbara Sultis. June Gordon, president of Baytown Classroom Teachers Association, urges fair market value and notes costs like Internet bills and car payments as factors in pay. No salaries decided at this meeting.
Mayor Nick Dixon and council members said the city will not appeal a appeals court decision ordering public release of salary records for Eagle Point Golf and Recreation Complex. The baytown Sun lawsuit prevailed against the city and Strong Sports Management, which ran the facility, with records to be made public.
