Pollution Strains Columbia River Salmon Stocks
Fisheries experts say dams and pollution have shifted the Columbia from a thriving salmon producer to stagnant pools. The opening of fishing seasons was briefly halted as runs dropped at Bonneville Dam. Nitrogen saturation, muddy runoff, and heat from dam forebays and reactor cooling worsen the crisis, with 50 dams on the system and plans for more. Authorities warn deforestation, irrigation withdrawal, gravel mining, and pesticides further diminish habitat as environmental assessments move forward.
