A summer recreational program runs in June at Harlem Elementary School for children who have completed first and second grades. Sessions are from 9 30 to 1 a m on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Baytown police faced repeated vandalism complaints Thursday and early Friday including tire slashings and property damage. A burglary attempt occurred at the West Main Cafe on 709 W Main. Mrs. C. W. Coker reported a back door break in. Retired Col. Henry Dittman said eggs were thrown on his car and two tires slashed on a car at his Burnet residence. The damaged vehicle is a 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado tied to Father M. A. Hebert of Tomball.
The Baytown Human Relations Council plans to present a statement to the school board Monday night in support of Harlem Elementary School’s pilot program. The council urges trustees to back School Supt. Johnny Clark’s efforts to preserve the pilot status and to defend the ongoing integration program amid federal scrutiny.
A frustrated taxpayer with a $471 grudge against the government hijacked a jet with 51 passengers demanding $100 million. He was captured after a cockpit gun battle that wounded one pilot in the stomach.
The 1970 Baytown directory lists population near 48,000, average family income 10,508, up from 42,400 and 8,957 in 1967. Top surnames include Smiths 292, Jones 109, Williams 206, Davis 20, Johnson 165, Browns 100. Houston engineer Frank H. Newnam Jr. warned that land in a 40 mile circle around Baytown to Houston will continue sinking for years due to heavy groundwater withdrawals. He cited subsidence of up to seven feet near Pasadena and pumps sinking more than 3 feet locally, with soil consolidation possible to 1,500 feet deep. He praised switching to surface water like Lake Livingston to mitigate the problem.
Houston set for major Port Commission change as Fentress Bracewell becomes chairman replacing Howard Tellepsen. Bracewell, son of former port head Judge J. B. Bracewell Sr., has long ties to Houston Ship Channel shipping. County Judge Bill Elliott and Mayor Louie Welch pushed the appointment at a joint meeting, where Tellepsen attended but offered no defense against conflict of interest charges.
Crosby ISD leaders Oliver Thompson and Supt. Jerry Prochazka travel to Austin for a State Board of Education hearing on restoring district accreditation retroactive to May 1 and through July 1, 1971. Also Friday the board hired Alex Sanchez as head football coach and set secretary and clerical salaries.
Harris County Water Control trustees ruled that a proposed improvement program and bond election take precedence over annexation for West Acres. About 20 residents sought annexation for sewer service, yet engineers warned that expansion could delay or worsen costs and require large trunk lines if growth accelerates.
Heavy fighting reported around Set Bo near Phnom Penh and a third day of battle for Kompong Thom as Lom phat falls in Ratanakiri. The Angkor area airport closed and tourists evacuated while Siem Reap sees sporadic clashes. Viet Cong and North Vietnamese shelling remains heavy in South Vietnam as advances continue.
In the Yellow Sea off the west coast, two North Korean fast patrol boats captured a 12 ton South Korean navy patrol boat with about 20 crew members near the armistice line by Paengnyong Do Island about 70 miles west of Seoul. The South Korean boat carried a .50 caliber machine gun. no firing details confirmed.
Pastor Leslie LeGrand of St. Mark's Methodist will depart Thursday to become district church superintendent for Memorial Spring Branch and Katy area. He will oversee 44 area churches and will hold degrees including doctor of divinity and doctor of jurisprudence. LeGrand moved to Baytown two years ago from Alvin, and he and his wife Mary Margaret have four children and three grandchildren.
