Texas House speaker hints at waiting on court ruling

Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick said a special session on school finance may be delayed until after the Texas Supreme Court rules on the case. Oral arguments are set for July 6 with a ruling likely later. Gov. Rick Perry had expected a session by June end, but Craddick prefers waiting for the court decision to guide any action. The dispute centers on funding through wealthier districts aiding poorer ones, with past court rulings and tax reform talks shaping the debate.

Lawmaker and Chief Justice in Pay Rise Clash

Austin lawmaker Rep. Terry Keel and Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson clashed over judicial pay during the final hours of the legislative session. Keel says Jefferson threatened political punishment over a pay raise, while Jefferson says Keel misunderstood a late night call. The session ended with no judicial pay increase as debates lingered and pension links to judges’ salaries remained.
