Amanda Thain of Sterling High School travels to Kenya with three other Key Club members to support UNICEF and Key Club International in a project using girls soccer to teach life choices. Fundraising through Trick or Treat for UNICEF funds uniforms and equipment. the program aims to empower girls in Kwale and Mombasa regions. Thain and teammates underwent six months of prep including vaccinations and cultural study.

Former deputy to perform concert in Mont Belvieu
Former Chambers County Chief Deputy Sheriff Dearl Hardy, convicted of misdemeanor perjury last year, will perform a concert with Jackie Cox at First Baptist Church in Mont Belvieu on Sunday. His first single is being released to about 1,000 country radio stations in the United States and Europe. Hardy and co-defendant were convicted in March 2004 of pressuring two deputies to file a false probable cause affidavit to charge Vernon Coates with drunken driving. See HARDY on Page 8A.

Early runoff voting surges in City Council race
With two days left, early voting for City Council District 1 runoff has surpassed the entire regular election’s early total. As of Friday 311 ballots were cast, with voting set to end on June 11. Mercedes Renteria III led regular early voting with 54.34 percent while Fred Aguilar had 38.11 percent. Weekend voting is popular. early voting runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Tuesday.

First twin graduates at Lee High School remembered
Jerry Foster recalls 1958 Lee High School graduation that featured six sets of twins including his twin Jack. Among the twins were Dorothy Summersill, Leonard Neuerburg, Janette Savage, Aileen Farrell, Judy Clement, and others, with Norton noting she is nearing Social Security eligibility. Foster sought out all 1958 twins in the Baytown area.
