Former Texas Land Commissioner Rascom Giles was found guilty of aiding in the theft of 6,300 from the Veterans Land Board. The jury recommended three years in prison after a 23 day trial. Giles admitted surprise at the verdict and said rights would be pursued.

Fire Captain Willett and Dr. Homer B. Hix assess a recurring odor in Oak Cliff Dallas as possibly phosgene gas or freshly mown hay. Hix warns the poison gas is dangerous in small amounts while Willett notes extensive grass mowing and wind carrying odors toward the city. No storage sites for phosgene are known.
Bulgaria admitted with sincere regret that its anti-aircraft guns shot down an Israeli Constellation near the Greek border. The crash left 58 dead, including 38 Americans, as Israel demanded access for an investigation and Bulgaria pledged a commission to probe the disaster.
R W Jordan a Houston businessman and Chambers county resident stopped on Tri City Beach road Wednesday night to assist an injured boy struck by a car It was Jordan s son Bobby 14 who lay on the pavement bru ised and stunned with a crumpled bicycle nearby Bobby was taken to Lillie Duke hospital in a Paul AL Lee ambulance where doctors found his injuries not serious His mother said he received a severe blow to the head his back was badly bruised and he has numerous other bruises and abrasions He was in bed at home Thursday Mrs Jordan said Bobby and 14 year old Larry Kelly a neighbor were riding along the road and simply didn t see the car The driver and his wife assisted with the injured boy and later came to the Jordan home Mrs Jordan said the driver s name is Fisher but she did not get his first name or address Deputy Sheriff L R Ricketson of Mont Belvieu investigated the accident but could not be reached for hours and said he did not have Fisher s full name My husband was returning from Houston when a woman waved him to stop at the scene of the accident She asked him to help with the boy who had been hurt He said he almost collapsed when he saw our boy lying there Mrs Fisher said Mrs Fisher was at home at the time Larry rode back on his bicycle to notify her It was not more than 1000 feet from our house but I thought I would never get there

The administration’s 10 year, 338.6 billion proposal is rejected, as is the Democrats plan for 50.477 billion over 13 years funded by higher highway taxes. Grand jury charges five in Houston housing scandal while pollution cases move forward. Three water pollution indictments target Humble Oil and Refining Baytown plants set for trial next Wednesday in Justice of the Peace Walter Queen's court. General Tire charge dismissed after DA and health unit review found insufficient evidence, and Index Chemical Co. pleaded guilty and paid a $100 fine.
Baytown will not hold make up days for polio vaccine. A daily clinic at Harris County Health Office in Houston runs from 2 to 4 pm weekdays and 8 30 to 11 am Saturdays through August 19. Only 56 percent of eligible Baytown children returned for second Salk shots, with 1 716 of 3 959 eligible receiving boosters on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The U S Public Health Service reports 812 polio cases nationwide last year, up from 567 the prior week. New England shows a sharp 1 percent weekly increase, while overall incidence remains within seasonal expectations.
A 1.01 inch rainfall Wednesday night cooled the area as temperatures slid from a 91 degree high to 75 overnight. Thursday morning overcast skies kept temperatures low at 10:45 am, with scattered showers across West Texas and predictions of more rain spreading eastward.

Indicted were Roy Floyd former city treasurer Joe Sam AngIe Luther Nisbet Wade Coffman August Danburg plus associates accused of felony theft bribery and kickbacks tied to city land deals and rightOfWay projects involving inflated prices and illicit payouts.
Crosby county fair opens September 1 for a three day event featuring livestock and farm exhibits and hon making displays. The event includes nightly rodeo shows using stock from Wing Ranch Rodeo Inc, led by Crosby Rodeo Club. The Crosby Hunter Chamber of Commerce sponsors Western Week, while Crosby Lions Club members prepare for the beard growing contest.
Harris County medical society calls a special meeting for August 17 to vote on accepting or rejecting the executive board stance opposing creation of a hospital district to fund the county hospital.
