Baytown Council backs Amendment No 5 in state referendum

The Baytown Human Relations Council endorsed Amendment No 5 to raise the state public assistance spending ceiling. Representative Mrs. J T Sloane will disseminate information to voters. The measure would lift the ceiling to 0 million from 60 million, with 25 percent state funds and 75 percent federal funds. The funds support Old Age Assistance, Aid to Families With Dependent Children, Aid to the Blind, and aid to the Permanently and Totally Disabled, and a recent failed amendment led to cuts across programs.

Registration Opens For Shelter Live-in

The Baytown Civil Defense office at City Hall opens registrations for the last shelter live-in course of the year. The course is scheduled for August 15 and 16. Interested persons may register or obtain more information by calling the Civil Defense office. In a prior course at Civil Defense headquarters radiologist Dr. W. A. Goodrich supervised radiation detectors, geiger counters, and dosimeters. Instructor HI. Zimemerrman spoke on the federal shelter supply of crackers, carbohydrate supplement, sanitation kit, water drum with plastic lines, and radiological instruments. W. W. Brown urged cooperation during an emergency. Director Fletcher Hickerson noted local government would marshal all resources.
