Baytown Mayor Glen Walker announced a second public session with the citizen group denouncing minority rights concerns. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. next Friday to hear complaints ranging from street drainage to alleged police bias and job discrimination.
Attendees include Mr and Mrs Elmer Evans and other Baytown relatives such as Mr and Mrs George Edwards and Mr and Mrs Ewell Cutbirth. A funeral service is planned in Houston for Evans sister Mrs George Casey with Baytown kin noted.
Mr and Mrs Leonard Keller return home after a two week absence following the death of their son Adrian Keller in Houston on June 29 due to a heart attack. Families mention Army service in Vietnam, Air Force discharge, and safety reports from San Salvador where Standard Oil employees David Jeffry and Rody Washburn are stationed. Local residents share small personal updates including decorations, new cars, and remembered friends.
Westheimer Properties of Houston planned to file with the Texas Water Quality Board to discharge domestic sewage into the San Jacinto River for a 180 acre tract west of Thompson Road. An earlier Spring Gully discharge plan was withdrawn and may be refiled if San Jacinto approval is not granted. Opponents warned of health hazards and unsightliness amid Baytown levee project concerns.
Peggy Wilborn daughter of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Wilborn of Anahuac is named Texas State Sweetheart of Future Farmers of America. The 7 year old Anahuac High School graduate was elected Friday in Fort Worth.
Baytown shows higher wages and lower taxes than several comparable cities in a cost of living study released at the Baytown Chamber luncheon. The report covers fourth quarter 1968 and first quarter 1969 with cities including Pontiac Michigan Brookline Massachusetts Garland Texas Union New Jersey Oshkosh Wisconsin Waukegan Illinois Wheeling West Virginia and Lake Charles Louisiana.
Apollo 11 astronauts Armstrong Aldrin and Collins raced toward lunar orbit reporting a brilliant corona and eerie lighting as they, 33,000 miles from the Moon, prepared to enter a 69 mile high orbit and begin two days of manned space adventure.
Baytown police traffic section under Sgt. R. W. Cooper enforces a new city ordinance on abandoned cars. About 40 cars spotted in one area. at least 100 abandoned citywide. Owners get five days to move vehicles or face impoundment and eventual sale at auction. Definitions include hidden, unlicensed, or unidentifiable cars left between three and thirty days. An inventory is taken before impounding to aid later owner claims.
Gulf Oil officials invited national and local newsmen to tour the Cedar Bayou Olefin Plant. The visit showcased water quality testing and a mobile conservation lab from Cleveland. The plant uses 2.5 million gallons daily, began operation in 1963, and sits on about 96 acres near Interstate 10, eight miles north of Baytown.
