Valley Workers Vote Again On Union Affiliation
Rio Grande Valley farm workers vote tonight on whether to affiliate with the National Farm Workers Association. Last month 223 favored the Delano, California union with one dissenting vote. NFWA President Cesar Chavez allegedly ordered the second vote after union vice president Margit Sanchez challenged legality. The union seeks a $1.25 hourly minimum for seasonal field hands. Growers say the strike is legal and obtained an injunction to halt picketing. A 400 mile protest march to the Texas Capitol paused for rest near Linn with supporters from Houston and Corpus Christi. The marchers attended a fundraising dance in Mission and planned further stops in Falfurria, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio.
