Harris County funds to fix pollution near San Jacinto pits
In June Harris County allocated part of a 29 million environmental settlement to Highlands for water quality and air testing within five miles of the San Jacinto Waste Pits. The pits, an EPA superfund site since 2008, prompted a 2011 armored cap project by MIMC and International Paper. An EPA Army Corps report on a permanent remedy is expected in December. Authorities pursued civil action against International Paper Waste Management of Texas McGinnis Industrial Maintenance and GC Environmental in October last year. A DSHS cancer cluster study around the river found higher than expected childhood cancer rates, prompting a panel to consider a deeper study with a conference call due at month’s end.
