Harris County upgrades regional USAR team with new emergency equipment
Harris County joins Baytown and the Southeast Texas Regional USAR task force to deploy Type 3 FEMA grade gear for swift disaster response. The Baytown based unit houses cameras for void searches, breaching tools, collapse support gear, and confined space extraction devices. The 150 member regional squad spans Harris, Montgomery and Fort Bend counties, trained in firefighting, EMS, hazmat, rescue, safety and incident command. Officials say the program, run since 2006 under the Houston UASI framework, aims for fast, coordinated responses to disasters and structural collapses regionwide. Baytown reports 4,500 hours of extra training and over $1 million in equipment and training funding from UASI grants.
