Iraqi Civil Conflict Escalates With Missile Attack and Assassination
In a marked escalation, insurgents fired a surface to air missile at a U S transport plane during its landing in Baghdad. An American soldier was killed in a rocket propelled grenade attack near Abu Ghraib, and Hadithah mayor Mohammed Nayil al Jurayfi was assassinated while driving away from his office. A child died from a grenade thrown into a bank convoy, with several bystanders wounded. General John Abizaid said the fighting resembles a classical guerrilla war, and US forces anticipate a lengthy deployment while preparing for ongoing attacks by Saddam loyalists and unknown groups. The wave of violence follows increased insurgent activity across Iraq, including threats to peacekeepers and local officials.
