Larry Boyd, a 20 year education veteran with 17 years as a superintendent, becomes Barbers Hill School District’s new leader. Formerly at Groveton Crescent Independent School District, he also led Northeast Houston and Hitchcock districts. Born in Athens, he holds a master's in education from the University of Houston and served as Air Force captain. He and his wife plan to relocate with their two sons, and Boyd emphasizes youth activities and sports passion.
Barbers Hill School Board hires W Grimes Jr as counselor and American History teacher. Grimes holds a masters from Sam Houston State Teachers College and taught at New Caney and Woodville. Married with two children, he is a Woodville native. Also hiring Mrs Wisian Smith for fourth grade replaces Mrs Underwood. she graduates from the University of Houston in August and is a Lee College alum.
Cape Kennedy Fla AP reports technical problems forced postponement of a three satellite launch plan to establish a space network for monitoring the limited nuclear test ban treaty. The Air Force tentatively rescheduled the Atlas Agena booster rocket launch for Friday.
AP dispatch from San Francisco reports Barry Goldwater solidifying momentum toward the Republican nomination. He swept Tuesday night’s events with a clear two to one regional lead, while attacks from William Scranton’s camp faltered. Eisenhower and Nixon urged party unity as Goldwater readies his acceptance speech and selects a running mate. A key vote rejected Scranton’s Civil Rights Act plank amendment, signaling platform progress amid a tense convention.
Funeral services were conducted for seven year old Laura Kathryn Leathenwood at Paul U. Lee Funeral Home with pastors A L Jordan and J T Barnett officiating. She died at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. Survived by parents Jennie Lou and James Nelson Leathenwood and siblings, with grandparents E C Leath erwood and G J Stavall of Baytown. Interment followed at Guidry Cemetery Batson Prairie. Donations requested to Texas Children's Hospital hematology department.
Eleven year old Paul Sheffield held a "Summer Fun Carnival" in his yard at 227 John A. Wooster to raise money for the American Parkinson Disease Association after his mother died of Parkinson's. Shelley's sister counted the gate profits, estimated at 24 dollars, all to aid Parkinson's research. Local youths helped, with homemade games, fortune telling and posters advertising the event, which drew about 70 to 100 children before dusk.
In San Francisco the Republican convention soundly rejected Scranton’s civil rights and extremism planks as well as Romney’s parallel proposals, with a 2-1 roll call showing Goldwater conservatives consolidating support. Scranton campaigned for stronger civil rights action and federal enforcement, while Goldwater’s backers prevailed on key platform planks.

President Johnson signed the appropriation authorizing 25 000 for Cedar Bayou study plus other stations. Army Engineers report 817 500 remains in the fund and will finance the study after formal notification and final budget approval. Rep Albert Thomas added the study to prior legislation and had released the funds. The project begins as soon as notification is received.

Lanham announced plans to resurface East Texas Avenue from 130 to Third Street to Seventh Street with a 1 inch asphalt layer. Bransey of Pr. plus Skrla Construction Co. will fund half of the 3,875 dollar surface cost as Baytown crews continue street repairs. The project follows prior resurfacing in Baytown and includes South Pruett Street work now underway.
