Budget approves United Fund goal set at 131 025

The Baytown and East Harris County United Fund budget for 1956 was approved at 131 025 by the Community Chest board, up from 127 071 in 1955. The plan includes new funding for Baytown Opportunity School for mentally retarded children and adjustments across welfare, health, recreation, and agency allocations, with total requests exceeding the approved budget.

Before Construction Rule Adopted by Baytown Council

Baytown’s city council on Thursday night plans to test a new 4 percent procedure for approving subdivisions. For the first time final approval will be granted on street paving utilities work and bond insurance before construction starts. The Roseland Oaks subdivision, modeled after River Oaks in Houston, will be the first subject to the amendment. City Manager Middleton said the project’s financing amount would be decided at the Thursday meeting.

Union Okays Telephone Contract Workers Here Await Terms Of Agreement

Baytown workers of General Telephone Co formed in the Southwest await details of a new contract after union Local 6180 Communications of America announced a settlement ending a dispute that began July 1. The agreement covers about 2000 employees across Texas New Mexico Oklahoma and Louisiana with Baytown staff staying on during talks and praised for avoiding a strike.

Salk Vaccine Program Set To Resume In Baytown

Baytown's polio inoculation program may restart on July 26 and 27 with clinics at previous elementary sites. Dog That Bit Girl Hunted by Father Fears Rabid Mongrel

Missouri Street Reopens To Spur 201 Traffic

Public Works Director C W Grantham announced Missouri Street is open for travel from Oklahoma to Spur 201 after a July 1 resurfacing. The restored route shortens trips for West Baytown residents, allowing motorists to connect Missouri Street to Spur 201 then West Main toward East Baytown.

Plant Man's Wife Killed In Collision

Mrs. Lewla Marks of La Porte wife of a Baytown Refinery worker was killed Wednesday night in a collision at La Marque. The Maris' young sons Victor and Randy are in critical condition. They were returning from Galveston when another car struck a guywire on a utility pole, knocking it down onto the Marks car and causing the crash. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Art Simpson.

Blood donors rally for Roy Carter at Hermann Hospital

Fourteen pints have been donated for Roy Carter with 32 pints used in transfusions to date. Carter has received 24 pints since his Houston hospital admission after a swimming accident and neck injury. Miss Tobye Fram, UT sophomore, is the only woman responding. she will donate in Houston. Carter’s condition shows slight improvement as he’s off an oxygen tent. A television has been donated by Willte’s, and a $300 buffet supper was held to aid his recovery. He is in room 403, and donors may contact Wehelige or go to Hermann Hospital for blood donations daily 9 to 11 and 2 to 4.

Baytown Opens New $60,000 Fire Station and Tower

Baytown dedicates a new 60000 dollar fire station and four story drill tower on Mark Street serving District No 2. The modern facility features air conditioning, indirect lighting, a snack bar, and dormitory along with a large four engine bays, a rear service slab, hose wash rack, and a folding front entrance. The ceremony is set for Friday with formal rites and local fanfare.

New Owners Take Over On Friday

United Rubber and Chemical, a subsidiary of United Carbon Co. of Charleston West Virginia, will take over Baytown’s government owned General Tire plant for more than 8 million dollars. Ceremonies will occur in Baytown Houston and Washington with Oscar Nelson Jr expected to lead the Baytown entrance ceremony and plant transfer. The switch will mean new employment terms for about 300 General Tire workers though no immediate changes are announced.

Junior High Girl Back In Hospital In Baytown

Jackie Taylor, a Baytown junior high school student, is back in Hermann hospital after a relapse. Her parents Mr and Mrs Jack Taylor of Utah reported she was much improved today. She was rushed to hospital Wednesday and had a prior week-long stay three weeks ago. She is expected to be home in about five days. Room 534.
