Ex-GIs Return Home From Communist China Facing Consequences
Three American ex GIs William A. Cowart Lewis W. Griggs and Otho G. Bell left Communist China for Hong Kong and will sail to the United States aboard the President Cleveland with plans to reach San Francisco on July 29. The men, dishonorably discharged after joining with communists and refusing repatriation during the Korean War, faced limited status as prohibitive immigrants until U.S. consular officials confirmed their citizenship. The trip home was arranged with aid from the American consulate and British Red Cross providing clothing and passage funding as the trio signed promissory notes to repay costs when able.
