Oklahoma 301 corn promises higher yields in southwest
United Press reports Oklahoma 301, a late maturing yellow corn, will be available to a limited number of farmers next spring. Tested at the Oklahoma agricultural experimental station, it averaged 86.6 bushels per acre on high fertility soils and 50.3 on medium fertility in 1950 51, with 89 percent standing plants. Seed supply aims for about 10 000 acres in 1953 and 85 000 in 193. The strain, cross of four varieties, resists ear worms but ears are harder to harvest with a reecaauica picker. Southwest dairy herds face possible feed shortages due to dry weather and high hay demand, potentially forcing some farmers to sell dairy herds. An Oklahoma A&M household scientist suggests storing eggs in a deep freeze to beat winter egg prices, noting frozen whites remain good and advising sugar or corn syrup for preservation and careful mixing.

Valley Farmers Turn To Wells For Water
Edinburg July reports a shift in Hidalgo county from Rio Grande irrigation to well water as a stopgap. Farmers drill 206 to 1700 foot wells, paying 6500 to 30000 dollars, with some wells yielding enough to boost yields but soil experts warn of poor quality water and long term reliance concerns. The Falcon Dam project, 75 miles upriver, promises steadier flow and irrigation for about 670,080 acres, easing dependence on erratic river water.
