Humble Promotes J Chatfield to Senior Staff Engineer
J N Chatfield has been promoted to senior staff engineer in the Equipment Engineering Department at Humble Baytown Refinery. He will lead the Corrosion Engineering Group providing information and counsel on corrosion problems. Chatfield joined Humble in 1934 as an assistant seismograph operator and moved to Baytown Refinery as a junior chemical engineer in 1936. He earned a BS in chemical engineering from the University of Alabama in 1932 and did AES work at LSU. He belongs to AIChE, served on the Coating Society of the Houston Area board, and is a member of NACE. He has ties to Baytown churches and civic groups and has two sons.

Humble Tests Acoustic Reentry System For Offshore Drilling
Humble Offshore Drilling announces a successful test of an acoustic reentry system from the Caldrill 1 coring vessel in 575 feet off the Texas coast. Four acoustic components direct the drill stem to the hole, eliminating need for underwater cameras. The system used a corner reflector and funnel device, lowering the drill pipe into the casing 16 times with the projector and casing recovered after a day. Developed jointly by EG&G International Brown Equipment and Service Tools Inc and Humble, the test demonstrates positioning accuracy without traditional guidance.
