Astronauts' Pay Rises Add to Prestige and Rewards
Pay scales for the original seven and other astronauts show military salaries plus private earnings from Field Enterprises and Educational Corp. The top civilian (Armstrong) earns about 18,950 with seven-figure celebrity perks while Cmdrs. Shepard and Grissom lead military pay at 15,361.56. The group leveraged earnings into investments, including a Cocoa Beach motel, with post-flight roles in banking and corporate boards.
