The Nixon administration ends federal aid to three southern school districts and files anti segregation suits across regions.
Dr. R. W. Pipkin retires after 36 years as Humble Oil plant medical director. He joined Jan. 1, 1933, when the refinery had about 2,300 employees. it now has about 3,500. Early years saw injuries and burns. safety improvements reduced serious injuries. Pipkin completed internship at Hermann Hospital. He planned to practice, but stayed with Humble and found it rewarding. He is active in local service groups and Trinity Episcopal Church.
Justice of the Peace Glenn Vickery may hold a jury trial week in Baytown in the open air as indoor space is unavailable. He sought use of the Community Building but was denied. city officials consider council chamber or city hall conference room for sessions. Court sits in the county building beside the police HQ.

Harris County Commissioners Court schedules a July 15 bond vote for 21.51 million to fund drainage and flood control projects across the county including Baytown area construction worth 1 million. Plans cover Jailhouse Ditch extension, Massey Tompkins Road bridges, Pine Gulley sewers, Bohemian Head outfall, and a San Jacinto River channel. The measure, backed by the Chamber groups, would be financed over four to five years with no tax increase.
NASA reports Benny the biosatellite monkey died suddenly after returning from 140 earth orbits. Autopsy ordered. officials say data from the mission may still yield value. Benny was treated by a team of 150 doctors and technicians before passing away at Hawaii's Air Force base.
