Oman Scouts Ride Land Rovers In Desert Patrol
Oman Trucial Oman Scouts, part of the Union of Arab Emirates defense, patrol the desert by Land Rovers replacing camels. Based in Sharjah and Manamah, the 1,600-strong force blends British officers with Arab troops, guarding oil interests and countering slave trade and banditry. The unit hopes for helicopters and patrol boats as British support winds down.
