About 750 Baytown area women join the Mothers March of Dimes Tuesday to raise funds for the National Foundation aiding research and patient care for birth defects and polio. East Baytown chairs include Mrs. R. B. Ballarbee and Mrs. O. Kleck. West Baytown captains include Mrs. D. M. Allen and Mrs. J. E. Bridges. Highlands captains are Mrs. T. J. Ickes and Mrs. Raymond Porter. McNair head is Mrs. Estelle Hunter. The event begins around 8 p.m. with bank headquarters at Citizens National Bank and police escort offered after collection. Leaflets and cookies will be provided. mailers unable to attend may send contributions by mail.
The City Council will appoint a member to the Civil Service Commission to replace Dr. Donald E. Brunson, whose term expires. A regular meeting at 6:20 p.m. will discuss bids for a street sweeper and an ordinance to schedule the city council election for April 6. An amendment to the tavern licensing ordinance clarifies 300 feet distance from tavern to residential areas, amid petitions from Stewart Heights residents over a North Main tavern and a nearby garage easement. Dr. Bob Werford will talk on a teenage ball program and Paul Parkinson, for Evay Maud Civic Association, will discuss streets.
Marvin Watson, Texas Democrat leader and ally of President Johnson, will join the White House staff as special assistant on February 1. Press secretary George B Reedy announced the appointment after months of speculation. Watson will earn 28,400 dollars annually and take on administrative duties and projects including federal state relations.
A fire at 3 03 p m damaged the home of Willard in Bay town with an estimated eight thousand dollars in damages. Firemen battled the blaze as chief Art kept watch on the scene.
