Baytown officials and long time residents gathered at City Hall to mark the 60th anniversary of Baytown’s consolidation in 1948. U S representatives Gene Green and Ted Poe read a joint resolution praising the city, as Green promised its passage in Congress. Mayor Stephen DonCarlos praised past leaders and looked to the next six decades.
Baytown City Council approved a curbside recycling contract with Waste Management. A 60 to 90 day start up is expected before service starts, with a $2.20 monthly fee for collection of newspapers plastics and aluminum cans. Glass plastics and slick papers are discouraged but will be sorted if mixed in. 18 gallon tubs cost about $150000 for roughly 18000 homes. if sponsors don’t cover it, 30 cents more per month. Pickups occur weekly on existing trash days.
Work on Interstate 10 east of the Trinity River Bridge near Anahuac will switch sides as drivers shift to new lanes. The $65 million project aims to add three lanes in each direction to match the rest of the highway. Construction began in September 2005 with the northern lanes. Traffic has used the frontage road during the project.
